Now it’s time to read it with Francesco at the front of my mind and change the order in which I enjoy it all. I can’t wait to delve back into Smith’s astonishing book and see what an entirely new perspective makes me feel this time around.’
‘I’ll be rereading Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half A Yellow Sun – or I will be if Santa gets the hint and delivers the gorgeous 4th estate special editions that were issued this year of her three novels and one short story collection. Ngozi Adichie is living proof you can be smart, talented, socially and politically aware and give a damn about lipstick – I have a massive girl crush on her.’
‘On the basis that I’m going to be in South America this Christmas, I’m going to take Bel Canto by Ann Patchett with me. It manages to be a gripping page turner as well as a languid and lyrical observation of relationships and the power of music. I loved it in 2002 when it won the prize .. and 14 years on I’m definitely overdue a re-read.’
