The books the 2017 judges will rediscover this Xmas

The festive season is the perfect time to relax (preferably in a comfy chair, in front of a roaring fire) with an old favourite and lose yourself in its pages. Our brilliant 2017 judges have been pondering which of the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction winners they’ll be revisiting over the Christmas break and the results are in…

‘I’ll be re-discovering Ali Smith’s dazzling How to be Both. I loved this novel when I first read it, and George was my main character as she lead me through the narrative. Now it’s time to read it with Francesco at the front of my mind and change the order in which I enjoy it all. I can’t wait to delve back into Smith’s astonishing book and see what an entirely new perspective makes me feel this time around.’

‘I’ll be rereading Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half A Yellow Sun – or I will be if Santa gets the hint and delivers the gorgeous 4th estate special editions that were issued this year of her three novels and one short story collection. Ngozi Adichie is living proof you can be smart, talented, socially and politically aware and give a damn about lipstick – I have a massive girl crush on her.’

‘On the basis that I’m going to be in South America this Christmas, I’m going to take Bel Canto by Ann Patchett with me. It manages to be a gripping page turner as well as a languid and lyrical observation of relationships and the power of music. I loved it in 2002 when it won the prize .. and 14 years on I’m definitely overdue a re-read.’

‘For Christmas I will be giving myself a treat and re-reading one of my favourite authors Marilynne Robinson. Her compassion and understanding of human psychology is the ideal accompaniment through the season of family arguments.’

‘Home by Marilynne Robinson is a dense and richly layered novel which forces the reader into a contemplation of the meaning of faith and morality, such that each reading produces new insights. I would happily receive this book for Christmas every year.’
