WOMEN’S PRIZE LIVE: What to Read This Summer

Reading Recommendations from bestselling authors Paula Hawkins and Louise Doughty.

Join us to hear 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction Judge Paula Hawkins and prize-winning author Louise Doughty discuss their favourite books by women.

In this intimate conversation, Paula and Louise will provide a wealth of reading recommendations, so come ready to peruse their bookshelves and take notes! They’ll explore the books by women which define key moments of their life, whether it’s a title that shook their world view in school or influenced their writing style; a holiday read that conjurs up wonderful memories for them or a book that they feel hasn’t had the recognition it deserves; a book they’ve only recently discovered during lockdown or a piece of new writing that is coming out this summer.

They’ll give us an update on their writing and what they are currently working on, and Paula will share her judging experience on this year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction and explain just how she managed all that reading earlier this year.

Paula Hawkins worked as a journalist for fifteen years before turning her hand to fiction. She is the author of two #1 New York Times bestselling novels, Into The Water and The Girl on The Train. An international #1 bestseller, The Girl on the Train has sold almost 20 million copies worldwide.

Louise Doughty is the author of nine novels, plus one work of non-fiction and five plays for radio. Her most recent book is Platform Seven and prior to that, the number one bestseller Apple Tree Yard. First published in 2013, it has sold over half a million copies in the UK alone and has been translated in thirty territories worldwide. A four-part TV adaptation with Emily Watson in the lead role was broadcast on Sunday nights on BBC1 in January 2017.

Doughty’s sixth novel, Whatever You Love, was shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award and longlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. She has also won awards for radio drama and short stories, along with publishing one work of non-fiction, A Novel in a Year, based on her popular newspaper column. She is a critic and cultural commentator for UK and international newspapers and broadcasts regularly for the BBC and has been the judge for many prizes and awards including the Man Booker Prize and the Costa Novel Award. She lives in London.
