Poems & Fragments

Sappho

This collection is the only complete, readily-available English translations of Sappho’s work. Some of her poems were written for the women she loved, but her circle of women friends and admirers was not unlike Socrates’ circle of followers. She lived on the Island of Lesbos around 600BC and was a highly regarded, admired poet influencing the likes of Plato, Horace and Catullus. The remains of her love poems are today thought of as the finest in any language.
